This Day That Age
The Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Dr. B.V. Keskar, announced in the Lok Sabha on September 30 that the Government had decided to accept in principle the Press Commission's recommendation that foreign newspapers and periodicals which dealt mainly with news and current affairs should not be allowed to bring out editions in India. Mr. Joachim Alva had asked whether the Government would remain firm in their resolve not to permit any foreigner to publish any periodical in this country. Dr. Keskar replied: "The decision which I read out is quite clear. There is no ambiguity about it." Mr. S. N. Das asked if the Government's attention had been drawn to a report published in the New York Times under the caption "India puts curbs on foreign press," and if so, what the real position in this regard was. Dr Keskar said he had seen the report and added, "The New York Times have been informed that pursuant to the uniform policy adopted in accordance with the above decision, it would not be possible to accede to their proposal for bringing out their international edition in India."
