CITIUS offers 40 Mbps downstream bandwidth Working on GSM-based technology products `Vision is to create a billion dollar telecom products company' To increase workforce
CHENNAI: The Chennai-based telecom equipment maker, Midas Communication, has said that it has developed a new system that offers broadband connectivity and triple-play (voice, video and data) services using the existing cable television network.
Unique system
The solution is called CITIUS. It is claimed to be a unique system that combines wireless Internet technology with the existing cable television network. Essentially, it helps a service provider to roll-out the broadband connectivity faster. At the same time, CITIUS assures an end-user high-speed data access with toll quality voice. Further, the end-user is provided with a range of video and broadband services.
Challenge
Addressing a press conference here on Friday, Shirish Purohit, CEO and Founder Director, said the existing cable television network was a one-way one for broadcast. The challenge lay in making it into a two-way digitised delivery medium to provide triple-play services. CITIUS, he said, could offer 40 Mbps downstream bandwidth per cable television channel. For upstream connectivity, CITIUS used corDECT, a wireless access platform developed by Midas, to provide 40 Mbps bandwidth with "always-on access." Mr. Purohit said Midas had deployed CITIUS system on four sites at the moment. Talks were now on with service providers in Tamil Nadu.
GSM based technology
The CEO said Midas was also working on GSM-based technology products. The infrastructure cost could prove a challenge here, he added. "We have to take the cost and scale it down to viable and attractive one for even a low customer base,'' he said. He indicated that trial run of products would happen some time in February next. Mr. Purohit said the company's revenue would reach Rs. 400 crore this year and expected it to double in the next two-to-three years. "Our vision is to create a billion dollar telecom products' company of India from Chennai with a global footprint,'' he said. The company's exports were worth $14 million. This would go up to $30 million next year, he added. He also indicated that the workforce would go up to 2,000 over the next 18 months from the current 800.
