NEW DELHI: The Centre on Friday extended by three months the tenure of the Justice Liberhan Commission, which is probing the sequence of events that had led to the demolition of the Babri Masjid on December 6, 1992. The Commission, the term of which was to expire on Friday, has been asked to submit its report on or before December 31. The Commission, set up on December 16, 1992, started holding sittings in January 1993. But they had to be kept in abeyance for about two years owing to interim orders passed by the Delhi High Court. It started regular hearing only in 1995. In the last 13 years, the Commission has held nearly 340 sittings and examined 101 witnesses 14 defence witnesses, 53 Central Government witnesses and 34 Commission witnesses.
