CHENNAI: The Madras High Court has set up a four-member committee to inspect the Theni Medical College on October 3 and file a report in the court on October 5. The committee, to be headed by the High Court's Registrar (Administration) in the Madurai Bench, shall have Health Secretary Sheela Rani Chungath as a member deputed by the Stated Government. Kamatchi, a retired Director of Medical Services, shall be the court's nominee. The Medical Council of India has been directed to nominate a member. A Division Bench, comprising Justice Prafulla Kumar Misra and Justice N. Kannadasan, passed this order on a writ appeal filed by T. Gunasagaran, Dean, Theni Medical College, who challenged a single judge order dated September 28. When the matter came up for hearing, Advocate-General N.R. Chandran said the Government sought to provide medical education to 100 students from the poor sections, and that the Theni Government Hospital was serving thousands of patients in the area. "Opening of the college itself is in public interest," he said. In the impugned order on September 28, Justice D. Murugesan disposed of the writ petition by the Dean, directing the Centre to dispose of the State's application for 2006-07. Mr. Gunasagaran filed the present appeal seeking a stay on its operation, and prayed for a direction permitting the college to admit students for the first year of MBBS course for 2005-06 itself.
