LDF clears power-sharing with Karunakaran's party

Special Correspondent

The front has left the decision to panels at the lower level

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Left Democratic Front (LDF) has virtually cleared the way for power-sharing with the Democratic Indira Congress (Karunakaran) in the local bodies by deciding to allow LDF panels at the lower level to take appropriate decision depending on local needs.

Briefing reporters after the LDF State committee meeting here on Friday, front convener Paloli Mohammed Kutty said that since the electoral adjustments with the DIC(K) were made at the local level, it was appropriate to take decisions on power-sharing also at the local level.

The LDF district committee concerned would take the decision on power-sharing with the DIC(K) in district panchayats. The mandalam LDF committees would take the decision in the case of the other local bodies where the DIC(K) had a major presence, he said.

Mr. Mohammed Kutty said there was no compulsion on the lower level LDF committees to accommodate the DIC(K) in the power-sharing arrangement in the local bodies, but it did not also see any reason to practise untouchability towards the DIC(K) and the Indian National League (INL) in the matter.

Asked when the DIC(K) could hope to become an LDF constituent, he said the LDF position on that question would depend on the new party's stand on various issues, which for the present was in a state of evolution. If things evolved in tune with the policies of the LDF, there would be an alliance, but if things go the other way, the relations between the two sides could turn sour, he said.

Describing the local body elections as the `dress rehearsal' for the Assembly election due in May next, the LDF convener said the LDF would use the opportunity given to it by the people to strengthen its base and fight the Assembly election with all its might.

He said there was no question of the LDF seeking BJP's support to gain control of any of the hung local bodies.

District panchayats

Mr. Mohammed Kutty said the CPI(M) would head the district panchayats in Kasaragod, Kannur, Kozhikode, Palakkad, Ernakulam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha and Thiruvananthapuram.
