CBI Director U.S.Misra
NEW DELHI: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday conducted nationwide raids on public servants and registered 58 cases against 70 public servants under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 and abuse of official position, cheating, forgery and criminal breach of trust and criminal conspiracy. Addressing a press conference at the agency headquarters here, CBI Director U.S. Misra said 198 places were searched across 54 cities and towns and the focus was on detecting cases against government officials relating to amassing of assets beyond known sources of legitimate income. The highest number of searches was carried out in 34 places in Delhi. The Searches were also carried out in Mumbai (25); Patna (8); Kolkata (7); Chennai (5); Dhanbad (3); Ranchi (3) and also in cities including Thiruvananthapuram, Kottayam, Goa, Bhojpur, Trichur, Lucknow, Trichy, Coimbatore, and Nagpur. During the special anti-corruption drive, the fourth such exercise this year, the CBI registered cases against 11 officers of the Customs and Central Excise, four of BSNL, three of Income Tax, two each of ONGC and Municipal Corporation of Delhi, two of Railways, four of nationalised banks and two of the National Council of Homoeopathy. The highlight of the crackdown was the booking of four government officials above the rank of Joint Secretary. A Commissioner of Income Tax belonging to the 1977 batch of Indian Revenue Service (IRS), posted in the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal, Mumbai, was booked for possession of assets to the tune of Rs. 43 lakhs. Mr. Misra said the agency sleuths stumbled upon Rs. 8.5-lakh cash, 18 plots of land in Jaipur and a house valued at about Rs. 1 crore during the search at his house. Another case of disproportionate assets amounting to Rs. 34 lakhs was registered against Commissioner of Customs and Central Excise, now posted as Additional Director-General, National Academy of Customs, Hazaribagh in Jharkhand.
