FRAYED TEMPERS: A stormy meeting of the Tirunelveli Corporation Council on Friday.
TIRUNELVELI: : Noisy scenes, fisticuffs and DMK members' boycott marred the Corporation Council meeting held on Friday. Two councillors, Vijayan (Congress) and Navaneetan (DMK), were arrested on a charge of assaulting the Congress councillor, Sinthasubramanian. The trouble originated from Mr. Navaneetan's allegation that there was corruption in execution of development works in ward 44. The Mayor, A. Jayarani, denying the charge, said the DMK members were raising irrelevant issues. Dissatisfied with the Mayor's reply, DMK councillors, led by Deputy Mayor Viswanathan, decided to boycott the proceedings and sought support from the Congress bench. Mr. Vijayan got up to support the boycott but found his party colleague, Mr. Sinthasubramanian, yet to join him. So, he punched the latter in the face. Mr. Navaneetan also assaulted Mr. Sinthasubramanian. Later, the aggrieved councillor lodged a complaint and the two councillors were arrested. Speaking to The Hindu , Ms. Jayarani said the entire confusion was caused by the opposition councillors' attempt to involve her father-in-law's name in road and building works.
Development works
The Council passed resolutions to improve 334 stretches of roads at a cost of Rs. 25 crores during the current fiscal. Besides, it was decided to strengthen the ongoing solid waste management project by purchasing four dumper trucks at a cost of Rs.44 lakhs and procure 60 bins for Rs.24 lakhs.
