NEW DELHI: The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation on Friday began integrated trials on the brand new 4.05-km Barakhamba-Karol Bagh section of the upcoming Line III that would connect Barakhamba, nextdoor to Connaught Place in the heart of the city, to Dwarka nearly 22 km away.

The first train trial run took place in the presence of DMRC Managing Director E. Sreedharan and Directors C. B. K. Rao, Satish Kumar and R. N. Joshi. The train was flagged off from Barakhamba at 9-50 in the morning and went up to Karol Bagh.

During the trials in the days and weeks ahead, overhead electrification, signalling, track and other control systems will be tested. The trial runs will continue for nearly two months and will be extended gradually, going right up to Dwarka finally.

The section from Barakhamba to Karol Bagh on which the trials started on Friday has intermediate stations at Connaught Place-Rajiv Chowk, R. K. Ashram Marg and Jhandewalan. The first two stations -- Barakhamba and Rajiv Chowk -- are underground while the rest are elevated.

The Barakhamba metro station is the first underground station on the Delhi Metro network to be built completely with Indian expertise and by Indian contractors. According to DMRC, the section that opened for trials on Friday also has a specially designed ramp that emerges at Panchkuian Road linking the underground and elevated sections. This ramp starts from the outer circle of Connaught Place at Panchkuian Road and achieves a height of 6 metres.

The Delhi Metro authorities will throw open the entire Barakhamba-Dwarka link to the public by December this year covering a distance of 22.79 km.

This section, touching some of the most crowded areas of the Capital, will have a total of 22 stations. However, the Phase I work on Line III will be completed only in March 2006 when the 2.81-km Barakhamba-Indraprastha section and the 6.5-km Dwarka-Dwarka Sub-city sections will open to the public.
