TAMBARAM: A section of Chitlapakkam residents on Friday blocked stormwater drains that discharged sewage from residential localities in East Tambaram into the Chitlapakkam lake. As a result, the drains got blocked and sewage flowed back into houses on Periazhwar Street in East Tambaram in the morning. According to G. Vaidehi, Bharatiya Janata Party councillor of Ward No. 21 of the Municipality, a section of residents, along with Radhakrishnan, Councillor and Vice-chairman of the Chitlapakkam Panchayat, placed sandbags along the drain to block sewage flow. She said that the councillor and his supporters abused her when she raised the issue. She then informed theMunicipality officials who rushed to the spot and ordered removal of the sandbags. But the councillor and his supporters resisted it saying they would no longer tolerate the discharge of sewage from the Tambaram area into their locality. When a senior Municipality official told him that they would sort out the issue with the Executive Officer of the Panchayat, Mr. Radhakrishnan said: "I am the vice-chairman and also the chairman. I am the executive officer of the panchayat too. Talk to me whatever you want to." The sand bags were removed after the officials said a culvert would be constructed to prevent the discharge of sewage into the Chitlapakkam lake.
