TIRUCHI: Nearly two years after the District Central Library was shifted to the outskirts from the heart of the city, there are no signs of it returning to its original location. The library, which was located at the Anna Platinum Jubilee Building near Singarathope, was shifted to a rented premises on Pudukottai Road near Sethuram Pillai Colony as the top floor of the building developed cracks and turned leaky. The Department of Libraries decided to shift the library after the Public Works Department certified that the building was unsafe for occupation. The library, with a collection of about 1.25 lakh titles, has suffered a substantial drop in the number of visitors ever since it was shifted. It attracted about 800 to 900 visitors daily when it was located near Singarathope but could not draw even half the number now. The authorities had said that the shifting of the library was only a temporary measure. They had said the Anna Platinum Jubilee Building, constructed in the 80s by the Local Library Authority, would be demolished and reconstructed within a year. Enquiries reveal that the plan has run into rough weather as the Department finds it difficult to evict the tenants from the building in which about 35 shops and commercial establishments are located. Some shopkeepers have taken the issue to the court complicating the matter further. Meanwhile, regular visitors complain about poor accessibility to the library as its present location is poorly connected by public transport system.
