Creating awareness on waste management

The growing menace of solid waste has forced the Ministry of Environment and Forests to swing into action. In its efforts to curb the problem, the Ministry has initiated a National Environment Awareness Campaign (NEAC) on the theme of solid waste management. The campaign will begin in December.

The State Committee on Science Technology and Environment is the Regional Resource Agency (RRA) in Kerala for implementing the programme.

The Ministry has identified 29 RRAs in the country as part of the programme. These agencies will assist the Ministry in formulating various components of the programme.

Organisations and groups active in the field of environment protection and education can participate in the project. NGOs, educational and training institutions, professional associations, scientific bodies, community organisations, and a whole range of official agencies will be involved in the implementation of the programme. The Ministry wants to create awareness on solid waste management among students, youth, teachers, women, NGOs, voluntary workers, farmers, rural population, general public, social workers, armed force personnel and industrial workers.

The theme of solid waste management will be taken across the country through seminars, workshops, training courses, camp, padayatra, rallies, public meetings exhibition, competitions, demonstration project and audio and visual clippings. To make the theme more illustrative, the Ministry will use the advantages of folk media, street theatre, CD-ROMs and other media tools.

The Ministry will give priority to projects woven around local environmental issues. Participating agencies have to evolve an action plan involving the local community.

The public will be a part of various campaign activities. For example, the Ministry had recommended that students could play a vital role. G. Krishnakumar
