  • Diabetes is classified as a genetic disease
  • Diabetics are prone to heart, kidney troubles
  • Regular exercise helps develop immunity
  • Efforts of Andhra Pradesh Diabetes Federation lauded

VIJAYAWADA: Senior physician V. Seshaiah on Saturday underlined the need for launching a campaign to create awareness among people about diabetes and its preventive measures. He called upon doctors to advise their patients suffering from obesity to undergo blood sugar test and to begin physical exercise.

Prof. Seshaiah inaugurated the two-day annual conference of the Andhra Pradesh Diabetes Federation here. He said that there was an increase in the number of diabetes patients every year and the rural population was no exception to it. He said that lack of physical exercise and consumption of high-calorie food were the two major factors contributing to the rise in number of diabetes patients.

Expressing concern over lack of awareness among people about the disease, Prof. Seshaiah said that it was the need of the hour to alert people about the chances of suffering from diabetes. People must know that diabetics were prone to heart diseases and kidney troubles. He lauded the efforts of the Andhra Pradesh Diabetes Federation for conducting scientific sessions for doctors at regular intervals. This federation stood as a role model to the diabetes associations in neighbouring States, he said.

President of the federation, Yalamanchi Sadasiva Rao, said that the theme of the conference was `treating to targets.' Stressing the need for evidence-based medicine, Dr. Rao observed that treatment of diabetes and its complications had become more organised in the recent past. Physician from Mumbai S. Sadikot and others were present.
