HUBLI: The extension work on the terminal at the Hubli Airport at a cost of Rs. 60.85 lakhs has begun with the Airports Authority of India granting permission for the work.

Deputy Commissioner M.S. Srikar disclosed this at a meting of the Hubli Airport Development Coordination Committee recently.

The airport houses a terminal of 416 sq. metres and the work for extending the terminal by another 312 sq. metres is under way. The work will include entrance and exit wings, transport belt, snacks bar and special facilities for differently-abled persons, B.G. Patil, Chief Civil Engineer of the Airports Authority, said.

Mr. Patil said the Airports Authority of India has taken steps for the improvement and strengthening of the runway. A tender for Rs. 6.93 crores has already been finalised and work will commence shortly, he said.

Mr. Srikar directed the revenue officer to mark the boundaries of the airport which is spread out in an area of 369 acres.

Replying to a question from U.G. Mukashi, member of the committee, airport manager K.R. Rajesh said that night landing facility has been made available at the airport. In view of the night landing facility, the meeting decided to ask representatives of Air Deccan and other aviation companies to apply for permission for flight operations at night in Hubli.

The Deputy Commissioner asked Air Deccan officials to start flight operations between Hubli and Mumbai at the earliest. B.R. Ravikantegowda, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order), said local police required systematic training with respect to security. The meeting decided to request the organisation concerned to give five-day training to the police.
