Probe into `appearance' of Shahabuddin for LLB exam

PATNA: Police have ordered a probe into the `appearance' of elusive Siwan MP Md. Shahabuddin for an examination at Muzaffarpur amid a nationwide alert sounded for him.

According to reports, the controversial Lok Sabha member appeared in the LLB part II examination at RDS College in Muzaffarpur on Thursday as candidate from S.K. Memorial Silver Jubilee Law College, Muzaffarpur, and vanished thereafter.

``I have asked the Superintendent of Police to hold a detailed investigation and submit a report as early as possible,'' the Deputy Inspector General of Tirhut range Gupteshwar Pandey told PTI over phone from Muzaffarpur.

Incidentally, Ratan Sanjay, Superintendent of Police of Muzaffarpur, who as Siwan police chief launched a campaign against Mr. Shahabuddin, has been asked to hold the inquiry.

A senior police officer said the MP did not personally turn up for the test and the papers were written by somebody else in his place and Mr. Shahabuddin's signature was obtained on the attendance sheet later.

``It is amazing that somebody like Mr. Shahabuddin will come, take the examination and do the vanishing act without getting noticed. An inquiry will reveal everything,'' Mr. Pandey said.

He said the Controller of Examination, invigilators and other university and college staff responsible for holding the examination would be interrogated and appropriate action taken.

The Bihar police had recently sounded a countrywide alert for Mr. Shahabuddin, who is evading arrest in a number of cases.
