KANNUR: Congress candidate P.C. Shaji was declared elected to the Kannur district panchayat from Vallithode ward on Saturday. Counting of votes in the ward had been withheld earlier following repolling in three booths. With the election of Mr. Shaji, the strength of the United Democratic Front in the 26-member panchayat has gone up to three. Mr. Shaji defeated his Kerala Congress rival Abraham Varikkappally by a margin of 3,603 votes. In the Vallithode ward of the Iritty block panchayat, Democratic Indira Congress (Karunakaran) candidate M.K. John was declared elected. He won the seat by a margin of 759 votes over his Congress rival Sebastian Kakkttil. The LDF has secured control of the block panchayat. In the 17-member Payam panchayat, CPI(M) nominees have been elected from 14 wards.
