New Delhi: M.C. Merykom entered the final of the third World women's boxing championship in Russia even as four of her compatriots failed to get past the semifinal hurdle. In the semifinals on Friday, Merykom beat Russian Elena Sabitova 31-16 in the 46kg category to assure herself of a silver medal. But her compatriots fell by the wayside but not before assuring themselves of the bronze medal. Kalpana Chowdhury lost to Simona Galassi of Italy 12-29 in the 50kg category, according to information received here. L. Sarita Devi went down to Swiss Dina Burger in the 54kg category. The referee stopped the match in the second round. And same was the fate of Aswathimol in the 70kg section. Her match against Russia's Olga Slavinskaya was also stopped by the referee in the second round. The other Indian Jyotsna lost to Turkish Semsi Yarali in the second round in the 86kg category. UNI
