Introduces new system to improve cellular services

  • Announces gift to customers on its formation day
  • Equipment provided by Nortel company
  • Package for DataOne customers unveiled

TIRUPATI: The Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has switched over to an altogether new system to provide extended signal reach to its mobile customers, among scores of other benefits. This was the gift announced on the occasion of the Nigam's formation day, observed all over on October 1.

While the corporation has 40 towers all over the district, 30 of them have been converted to the new system, with the equipment provided by Nortel company, in place of the one supported by Motorola.

The additional features that a customer can expect from the switchover is better indoor coverage and Internet facility via mobile phone.

Announcing this to mediapersons on Saturday, the general manager of the BSNL Tirupati telecom district, R. Mani, said 41 more sites were getting ready all over the district to ease the congestion.

The upgradation would increase the capacity of cell connections from 40,000 to 85,000 in each site. Equipment was being readied for commissioning in the new cell sites like Aragonda, Mahal, P. Kothakota, Mamandur Mitta, Vadamalapeta, Varadaiahpalem, B. Kothakota, Burakayalakota, Madanapalle and Tiruchanur.

Mr. Mani also announced the introduction of a new package in DataOne broadband with a reduced rental of Rs. 250 in Tirupati, where 350 connections had been provided so far. The corporation had set for itself a target of providing 1,200 connections by December.

    Initial hiccups

The transition to Nortel equipment had not been so smooth on Saturday as CellOne customers remained inaccessible for three to four hours on the day. The embarrassing part of it is that the disruption occurred at a time when the fifth formation day was being celebrated.
