"I still live... only because of that Gandhian fire that burns within."
TENHIPALAM: The Gandhian ideals in me have helped me live longer, social critic, Sukumar Azhikode has said. Speaking at a Gandhian meet organised by the Chair for Gandhian Studies and Research, Calicut University, at the University's Senate Hall on Saturday, he said "I would have died much before but for the Gandhian ideals and principles I hold." ``The astrologers who predicted that I will not survive beyond 65 years have all died. But I still live... only because of that Gandhian fire that burns within," said Prof. Azhikode. He said doctors, whenever they examined me, found many ailments and suggested more protein intake. "My protein is an audience like this," he said. The meeting was organised as part of the Chair's first anniversary celebrations. It also marked the Platinum Jubilee celebrations of Mahatma Gandhi's historic `Dandi March'. Tiruvathra Damodaran, who had been a companion of Gandhiji, fascinated the young audience when he took out his spinning wheel and made a yarn. "I still work on the spinning wheel, which is a symbol of non-violence and peace," he said. Six Gandhians were honoured on the occasion. Three writers who penned books on Gandhiji were also honoured. They were Akkitham (who wrote `Karma Sooryan'), Pala Narayanan Nair (`Gandhi Bharatam'), and Sukumar Azhikode (`Mahatmavinte Margam').
