Development was necessary, need for attention to ensure no damage was done to environment
PONDICHERRY: Lt. Governor of Pondicherry M. M. Lakhera has said that there was every need to protect environment, as there had been indiscriminate devastation of vast forest cover leading to alarming devastation and damage to the environment on an immeasurable scale. Felicitating a team of officers attached to the Army Ordnance Corps on their arrival here on Saturday during their current "Veh Safari` from Kargil to Kanyakumari at a function in Rajnivas the Lt. Governor said that India was endowed with rich minerals and natural resources and all that was needed was to take care of them without indiscriminately damaging them as the future generation would be in jeopardy by any action on the part of the present generation. While development was necessary there should be close attention to ensure that no damage was done to the environment. There was no point in ransacking nature in the name of development he added. Mr. Lakhera, himself a retired Lt. General, also said that there was also every need to motivate the youth on the Armed Forces and he hoped that the visit of the team to Pondicherry would bring to focus among the youth the awareness about defence services. Mr. Lakhera said that there should also be a positive attitude to recognize and encourage the strength of Indian citizens.
