`In Tamil Nadu, 85 per cent of the blood comes as voluntary donation'

CHENNAI:
On the occasion of national voluntary blood donation day on Saturday, Tamil Nadu State AIDS Control society and Tamil Nadu District Blood Transfusion Authority honoured doctors and individuals who had helped to improve the quality of blood products given to the needy.
Doctors who had been donating blood for years were awarded with medals while Government hospitals in various districts were honoured with shields. Two doctors, who are veteran donors, were honoured on the occasion. While a lady doctor has donated blood 85 times and the other has donated 145 times.
Quite a few doctors have donated more than 100 times. In Tamil Nadu, 85 per cent of the blood donated comes as voluntary donation, said K. M. Radhakrishnan, special officer at Dr. MGR Medical University. K. Gopal, adviser for UNICEF on HIV/AIDS, spoke.
