CHENNAI: Four cases of aged women being duped into parting with their gold jewellery were reported in the city on Friday and Saturday. A total of forty-four-and-a-half sovereigns has been taken away. A three-member gang took away six sovereigns of gold jewellery from an elderly woman, Rajalakshmi, in Triplicane around 10 a.m. on Saturday.According to the police, she was walking along Bells Road near her house, when the strangers warned her against wearing jewellery. She removed it and gave it to them who wrapped it in a piece of paper before giving it to her. On returning home, she found that the packet contained only stones. A case has been registered with Triplicane police.
Three similar incidents were reported on Friday. Parvatham (74) of Ashok Nagar lost 22 sovereigns bangles weighing10 sovereigns, her `mangal sutra' weighing eight sovereigns and a necklace worth four sovereigns. Kumaran Nagar police have registered a case and are investigating. Kantha Sharma (54) of AI Block, Anna Nagar, lost her 12-sovereign `mangal sutra.' The fourth incident was reported on TTK Road, Teynampet, in which a 59-year-old woman lost four-and-a-half sovereigns of jewellery. A senior police officer said a three-member gang had been operating in the city for the past few months. They go under ground after carrying out operations at three or more places on a day, he said. Another officer said some of the victims did not file complaints, as they did not want to be ridiculed. Special parties have been formed in each district to investigate such cases, the police said. They have cautioned women against handing over jewellery to strangers.
