Two killed in accidents

TIRUCHI: : In separate incidents, two persons were killed in road mishaps near Samayapuram and Sirganur in the district on Friday night.

A 45-year-old man riding a bicycle was fatally knocked down by a van on Iyyan Vaikkal bridge near Samayapuram. The victim has been identified as Saravanan of Ariyamangalam. The van collided head-on with the cycle killing Saravanan on the spot. The Samayapuram police have registered a case.

In the second accident which took place on the Tiruchi-Chennai National Highway at P. K. Agaram, a van on its way to Cuddalore district rammed a stationary lorry, killing one of the occupants of the van. The victim has been identified as Masilamani (45) of Cuddalore district.

The police said Masilamani was returning home after visiting the Palani temple. The van driver Srinivasan was admitted to a private hospital.

Held under Goondas Act

A 35-year-old history-sheeter involved in several drug trafficking cases was detained under the Goondas Act and lodged in Central Prison here on Friday.

A police release issued here said Gunasekaran of Palakkarai was detained under the Goondas Act as per the orders of the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Tiruchi range and Commissioner of Police (in charge) Sunil Kumar Singh.

Another release said Siva (27), Iyappan (19) and Murugan (33) were detained under the Goondas and lodged in Central Prison here on Saturday. They were arrested by the Fort Police for having indulged in two cases of dacoity from lorry drivers on the Tiruchi-Chennai bypass road near Paalpannai rondtana last month.

They extorted money, watch and cell phones from the lorry drivers. The release said the accused were arrested within 48 hours. The City Police have detained 36 persons under the Goondas Act so far this year, the release added.

Mettur level

The level in the Mettur dam stood at 111.91 feet today. The inflow was 8,913 cusecs and the discharge, 15,776 cusecs. — Staff Reporter.
