All set for Noyyal Yatra today

Special Correspondent

COIMBATORE: On October 2, thousands of students, farmers and the general public will walk 30 km for reviving a river that was once the pride of Coimbatore.

Overwhelming response

Siruthuli, the public initiative that has organised the Noyyal Yatra as part of its river restoration programme, says the response from the people continues to be overwhelming.

With the passing of each day towards October 2, scores of people keep enrolling for the yatra. Regular walkers (who have even walkers' clubs) numbering 1,000 have expressed willingness to join the yatra, says Siruthuli.

Clean water from the Noyyal will be collected in a kalasam at its point of origin in Madhvarayapuram (towards Siruvani).

It will be taken in a procession up to a spot near the Singanallur Tank in the city, 30 km towards east from the origin.

Cultural programmes

When the procession enters VOC Grounds, the participants will be dressed in whites to make it resemble the Dandi March led by Mahatma Gandhi.

Ministers and special invitees representing various sections will address a meeting that evening.

It will be followed by cultural programmes and a feast.
