HYDERABAD: The People's Union of Civil Liberties (PUCL) has condemned the justification by the Director-General of Police, Swaranjit Sen, of the killing of human rights activists by vigilante groups such as `Narsa Cobras.' It was high time the Government took serious notice of the DGP's statements and initiate necessary action to stop them, the PUCL president, Keshav Rao Jadhav, said. The PUCL, at the same time, condemned the killing of political workers and others by the Maoists and other ML groups. Speaking to reporters, Mr. Jadhav demanded that the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, clarify his stand as to why action was not being initiated to check the killings and threats issued to human rights activists by the self-styled cobras. The PUCL also expressed concern over the increasing number of murders taking place in respect of inter-caste and inter-religious marriages. While such marriages should promote amity among the different communities, they were fuelling more hatred due to their politicisation.
