HYDERABAD: The Chief Minister, Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, instructed officials not to harass two-wheeler riders on helmet issue. He, however, suggested to the people to wear helmets to prevent head injuries. In a message on the eve of launching `Safety Always For All Roads' (SAFAR), a month-long campaign tomorrow, he stressed the need for providing timely medical aid to accident victims. He said that drivers of heavy vehicles, autorickshaws and taxi operators would be offered special training on road safety during the campaign being taken up all over the State at a cost of Rs.5 crores. School buses would be regularly checked for fitness, an official release on Saturday said.
Need for awareness
Referring to the phenomenal growth of motor vehicles in the State--from 22 lakh in 1994-95 to 58 lakh in 2004-05, he stressed the need for educating people on road safety as the State stood fifth in the occurrence of accidents. Dr. Reddy said that drunken driving would be dealt with sternly. The rule prohibiting the plying of 15-year-old and above goods and stage carriages in the HUDA areas would be strictly implemented.
