This Day That Age
Prime Minister Nehru has declared that it is wrong to think that Hindi was an imposition, coming in the way of any other language. Addressing a mammoth gathering from the ramparts of Fort St. George in Madras on October 2, he assured the people that no step was being taken which would cast any burden on non-Hindi-knowing persons, whether in Government service or otherwise. He said the adoption of Hindi as the official language in India only meant that among the great national languages of the country, Hindi by virtue of various factors was the easiest to be adopted as the official language for all-India purposes. Tamil was a great and ancient language and he wanted more and more people in the North to learn it. Citizens of Madras in their tens of thousands gathered to hear Mr. Nehru and elaborate arrangements had been made to accommodate them in a stretch of the foreshore in front of the Fort.
