`Re-negotiate power-sharing formula'

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: A section of the Congress leaders have opposed the adoption of the Maharashtra model in the Dharam Singh Ministry and sharing of chairmanship for the large number of boards and corporations of the Government.

They demanded re-negotiation of the power sharing formula of 50:50 between the ruling parties to 60:40, arguing that the numerical strength of the Janata Dal (S) had reduced after the suspension of the former Deputy Chief Minister Siddaramaiah from that party.

Addressing presspersons after meeting AICC General Secretary in charge of Karnataka A.K. Antony here on Saturday, MPs R.L. Jalappa and Ambarish, the former Chairman of the Legislative Council B.L. Shankar, and the former Ministers H. Vishwanath and Kumar Bangarappa said they were against the adoption of the Maharashtra model in sharing portfolios in the Ministry and appointment of chairpersons to various corporations and boards.

A memorandum containing the various demands was submitted to Chief Minister N. Dharam Singh and Mr. Antony, they said. They wanted a reshuffle of the Ministry to give opportunity to younger legislators and release of more funds for the Stree Shakti programme launched by the previous Congress Government.
