TDP to contest Guntur Mayor election

Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: Adding a new dimension to the controversy within the Congress over Guntur Mayor's post, the Telugu Desam Party president, N. Chandrababu Naidu, on Sunday declared that the party too would field a candidate.

Commenting on the row, he said the differences among the ruling party leaders was affecting other parties too. The developments once again showed the pitfalls of indirect elections. This would not have happened if there were direct elections to the Mayor's post, he observed. He was speaking to press persons briefly after inaugurating a blood donation camp on the occasion of the Gandhi Jayanthi.

Appreciating the initiative of the partymen in organising the camp, he said it was such a socially responsible activity that would remain in people's minds.

A number of partymen participated in the camp and donated blood.

Addressing party workers, Mr. Naidu recalled how Mahatma Gandhi had lived for lofty ideals and urged them to emulate him.
