House-break-in: CLP leader informs Governor

Special Correspondent

Says it could have been done to intimidate him or bug his residence

CHENNAI: : Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader S.R. Balasubramoniyan on Sunday informed the Governor and the Speaker of the "house-break-in" of his residential flat in the Tower Block in Chennai, and requested them "to take suitable action."

He told The Hindu here that the house-breaking did not appear to have been committed for gain. "I am of the view that it could have been done to intimidate me or bug my residence, apart from stealing documents."

Mr. Balasubramoniyan submitted separate letters to Governor Surjit Singh Barnala and Speaker K. Kalimuthu about the incident that took place at his flat on Saturday in his absence. He also submitted to them copies of his complaint to the police about incident.

In his complaint to the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Kilpauk police station, the CLP leader said that he was informed by Kilpauk police about the lock-breaking incident while he was on his way to Mettupalayam. He returned to Chennai on Sunday morning.

He said on inspection of his flat and on verification, he found that the front door handle lock was broken open and the padlock was also removed. The bedroom was also opened by removing the padlock. There was no theft of any valuables or any other article. Papers and documents kept in the shelves were ransacked and left strewed all over the bed, he said.

"Subsequently police officials came to my flat and spoke to me regarding the occurrence. However, they have not taken any statement from me. I am given to understand by the police officials that they had inspected the entire flat yesterday itself when I was not there and also collected some finger print impressions," Mr. Balasubramoniyan said.

The manner of the house-breaking showed that it would not have been done for any monetary gain, he had said in his complaint.
