Mercy Williams
KOCHI: The CPI(M) district committee on Sunday formally cleared the name of Mercy Williams for the post of Kochi Mayor. The district committee, which met in the evening, also cleared the name of senior councillor C.K. Manisankar for the post of Deputy Mayor. Ms. Williams, a professor of sociology, represents Kunnumpuram, 36th division of the Corporation. She will be walking into annuls of history as the first woman Mayor of Kochi. The CPI(M) district secretariat had earlier cleared the names of Ms. Williams and Mr. Manisankar for the top posts. Mr. Manisankar is representing the Ponnurunni division in the Corporation for the second consecutive term. He is also a member of the CPI(M) district committee. Mr. Manisankar, a State committee member and district joint secretary of the CITU, is also the district president of the State Library council. He had been a member of the council since 1988. In the last council, he had served as the chairman of the Town Planning Standing committee.
