Call to harvest rainwater

Staff Reporter

Campaign rally taken out

  • Rally covers all 86 wards in City Corporation
  • Accorded reception at various places
  • Campaign lectures organised at 15 locations

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: : A vehicle rally to promote rainwater harvesting was taken out in the city under the joint auspices of the Land Use Board, the State Remote Sensing and Environment Centre and Jalanidhi. Board Commissioner Alphonse Kannathanam led the rally, which covered all the 86 wards in the City Corporation.

The former Ambassador, T.P. Sreenivasan, inaugurated the event.

In his message to the people, Mr. Kannanthanam said it was a pity that Kerala, a State which receives copious rains, is experiencing water scarcity.

He pointed out that the uncontrolled use of deadly pesticides by farmers was polluting the available water resources in the State.

Mr. Kannanthanam noted that 92 per cent of the rainwater received in Kerala was drained out to the sea in a day or two. "Hardly one per cent of the remaining water is absorbed by the earth. If only a portion of the rainwater falling on rooftops is collected and stored in ferrocement tanks, most parts of the State can survive the water-scarce period," he said.

The rally was accorded a reception at the Medical College by the NSS unit. The SAT Superintendent, Rajmohan, and the NSS programme officer, K. Vijayakumar, spoke. Campaign lectures were organised at 15 locations.

The Jalanidhi manager V. Subhash Chandra Bose and the Janasakthi State secretary Peter Pattassery were among those who accompanied the rally.
