NEW DELHI: A Ghana national was arrested by the Customs Department at the Indira Gandhi International Airport on Saturday for allegedly trying to smuggle out a heroin consignment procured in Afghanistan to Abidjan in the Ivory Coast. The officials seized 5.55 kg of heroin from his handbag. The accused, Joshua Mansah, arrived from Kabul on Saturday and was to board a flight to Abidjan via Gulf Airways when he was intercepted by the Customs officials. They searched his handbag and recovered the heroin concealed in the books. During interrogation, he allegedly disclosed that he had gone to Kabul via Pakistan. In a case reported on September 13, the Customs Department had arrested three Nigerian nationals after nearly 18 kg of heroin was found concealed in their consignment of shoes, purses, books and file covers, which they were taking to Addis AbabaIn view of the two recent cases of seizures, the officials feel that the smuggling of heroin from Afghanistan using India as a transit place is on the rise.
