Kongu EC is champion
Kongu Engineering College (Perundurai) defeated Vellalar College 2-0 to emerge the champion in the Anna University inter-zone football tournament in Perundurai on Tuesday. Venkateswara CE (Chennai) scored a 1-0 win over Coimbatore Institute of Technology (Coimbatore) to finish third. The event had lost its sheen with about 10 teams pulling out in the last minute. Only five teams participated in the tournament. The results: Final: Kongu Engineering (Perundurai) 2 (Rupadevi 1, Abhinaya 1) bt Vellalar CE&T (Erode) 0. Third place: Venkateswara EC (Chennai) 1 (Aarthi 1) bt CIT (Coimbatore) 0.
B Zone Reds triumphs
B Zone Reds won the title with an all-win record in the four-team league of the Madurai Kamaraj University inter-zonal basketball tournament on Tuesday. The other teams in the fray A Zone yellows, B Zone Blues and A Zone Greens finished in that order. The results: B Zone Reds bt B Zone Blues 61-42; bt A Zone Greens 78-51; bt A Zone Yellows 77-56; A Zone yellows bt A Zone Greens 67-57; B Zone Blues bt A Zone Yellows 72-68; A Zone Greens bt B Zone Blues 74-72.
Balamurugan shines
Balamurugan's 72 helped Saraswathy Narayanan College defeat Subbalakshmi Lakshmipathy College `Valiants 110' by 134 runs in the 7th TVR Trophy State-level inter-collegiate cricket tournament in Madurai on Tuesday. The scores: Saraswathy Narayanan College 183 for one in 20 overs (Balamurugan 72, Jeyaprakash 45) bt SLC Valiants 110' 49 in 13 overs. RLINS Madurai 113 for eight in 20 overs lost to Vikram Engg. College 114 in 13 overs (Sundar 49).
SMGC triumphs
Sri Meenakshi Government College for Women (SMGC, Madurai) beat Yadava College (Men, Madurai) 49-28 for the title in the Madurai Kamaraj University women's kabaddi tournament at the SRNM College ground in Madurai on Saturday.
