Police outposts in Madikeri for Dasara

Department taking steps to maintain law and order during the celebrations

    MADIKERI: The Kodagu police will open nine temporary outposts in Madikeri city to ensure law and order during the Madikeri Dasara celebrations, which began here on Tuesday.

    They will be opened at the market, private bus stand, junior college, Chaingate on Mysore Road, Ashokapura, Muthappa Temple, SAI grounds, Gandhi Mantap and the district hospital, Deputy Superintendent of Police (Madikeri division) Halesh Nayak told presspersons here on Tuesday.

    A head constable, constable, wireless operator and Home Guards will be deployed in each of the temporary outposts, he said. Police personnel will also be deployed in other places in the city, including Sudarshan Guest House, Shantiniketan, APMC Yard, Murnad Road, A.V. School, Sampigekatte, Kote Ganapathi Temple and Bhagavatinagar to assist the committee that will choose the first three best decorated cars.

    Mr. Nayak said 600 policemen, five platoons of the Karnataka State Reserve Police and three of District Armed Reserve and two fire engines will be deployed during the Dasara festivities. Virajpet Deputy Superintendent of Police will be in charge of Dasara celebrations in Gonicoppa, he added.

    Adequate bandobast will be made at Cauvery Kalakshetra and the Ranga Mandira at the Gandhi Maidan where cultural programmes will be staged from October 5 to 13. Policemen will also be posted on duty on October 9 during the Dasara sports meet, he said. An officer of the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police, two Circle Police Inspectors and five Sub-Inspectors, apart from other personnel, will be on duty at Gandhi Maidan on October 13, the last day of the festivities, Mr. Nayak said.

    Mobile check-posts

    Mobile check-posts will be opened at the Mangalore Road curve, Kodagu Vidyalaya on Siddapura road, Chaingate on Mysore Road, Sampigekatte on Somwarpet Road, on the flanks of Mangalore Road, on Virajpet Road close to the district hospital mortuary, district hospital and General Thimmaiah Circle, Mr. Nayak said. Lodge owners have been asked to inform those who have booked rooms from outside the district to be in the city by 4 p.m. on October 13. Residents of Mahadevpet and Ganapathi Street will be asked not to park their vehicles on the road, he said.

    Mr. Nayak said the police will appeal to the people to help them maintain law and order. A team of 25 policemen will be in mufti to prevent eve teasing and other such incidents. People may call 100, 101, 102, 229333 or 229149 in case of emergency, he said.
