Numismatist's pride
Rare coin. Photo: N. Sridharan
A city-based coin collector now has a original gold double mohur. The new addition to his collection is the first double mohur issued 170 years ago by the East India Company, says R. Vaidyanadhan. And he has got it along with the original presentation box issued by the Company. Governor-General Sir Charles Metcalf, who succeeded Lord William Bentinck, passed the first Uniform Coinage Act XVII on August 17, 1835.
This was the one and only double mohur (Rs. 30) weighing nearly four sovereigns issued during the reign of the British India coinage: 1835-1947.
