Power cut

CHENNAI: Power supply will be suspended in parts of Iyyapanthangal, Nanganallur, Thillai Ganga Nagar and VOC Nagar on Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for maintenance work.

Temples cleaned

Volunteers of Selfless Movement Improving Life Everywhere (SMILE) recently cleaned the Srinivasa Perumal temple at Mylapore and Ashta Bhuja Durgambigai temple at Rajakeezhpakkam. Over 75 volunteers participated.

Over 90 volunteers of Sevas, a T.Nagar-based social service organisation, cleaned up Theerthapaleeswarar Temple in Triplicane recently. To enroll as volunteers, contact A.Selvan over phone: 9382167197.

Medical camp

The NSS unit of New College organised a medical camp at Kanathur Reddy Kuppam village off the East Coast Road on Gandhi Jayanthi. More than 220 persons were treated at the camp. Expenses were to tune of Rs.one lakh.

Eye screening

Over 320 patients, including 150 students, were screened for eye ailments in a camp organised by Rajan Eye Care Hospital, Rotary Club of T.Nagar and Rotary Club of Silver Beach on Gandhi Jayanthi Day. Twenty-four patients were referred for cataract surgey.

Blood donation

Over 60 units of blood were donated at a camp organised by the Indian Red Cross at the Loyola College recently.

Multimedia exhibition

The Enviro Club of Guru Shree Shantivijai Jain College for Women organised a multimedia exhibition "Naturuno" to mark the World Habitat Day on October 3. Prof.Vinish Kumar Kathuria of Madras School of Economics inaugurated the exhibition.

Community service

Students of Zion Matriculation Higher Secondary School conducted a community service camp at Madambakkam village from September 24 to October 3. They took up the cleaning of the local temple, conducted an education camp and planted saplings during the time.

Protesters removed

About 115 persons, who were on strike before the State Guest House here on Monday, had to be forcibly shifted from the spot as the protest went well beyond the permitted time police said.

The protesters were demanding said that they should "rightfully be given ST community certificates" and not MBC certificates as is being done.

According to the Triplicane police, the strike was allowed till 6 p.m., but it went beyond 11 p.m.

Hence, the 115 persons, including 55 women, were removed from the spot and housed in a wedding hall.

Health post shifted

The Chennai Corporation's Ward 37, Zone III Health Post, Maternity Hospital, at Vadivelu II Cross Street, Perambur, is not structurally safe any more to take in patients. Large cracks in the walls and the ceiling threaten to bring the structure down.

The health post has now been shifted to the Kamaraj Nagar Dispensary in Ward 34.
