NEW DELHI: In a major drug haul, the Narcotics Branch of the Delhi police has seized 15.5 kg of heroin in two separate incidents in the past four days. Four alleged drug traffickers have been arrested in this connection. According to the police, Sunil Kapoor, and his associate, Gopal Sen, were arrested at Avantika Chowk in North-West Delhi on October 1 when they were going on a scooter around 7 a.m. A black bag containing 8 kg heroin was seized from them. Sunil and Gopal had received the consignment at Old Delhi railway station. Earlier, Sunil was arrested by the Narcotics Branch in 1999 for allegedly possessing 1 kg heroin. But, a year later, he was acquitted. After his acquittal, Sunil maintained a low profile and operated discreetly. He never met his clients at home and revealed his mobile phone number to only a select few. The police said Sunil, born at Jagadhari in Haryana, had come to Delhi along with his family as a small boy. His father used to run autorickshaws on a rental basis. Even as the family was facing a finance crunch, his father died. Sunil and his brothers then came to Bhajanpura in North-East Delhi. Here, Sunil came in contact with some pickpockets. They used to hire his autorickshaw for trailing buses in which they would operate. He also began consuming drugs and later became a full-fledged drug trafficker. The police said the antecedents of Gopal, a resident of Mandsaur in Madhya Pradesh, were being ascertained. In the second case, Surender Singh alias Geja and his associate, Bhupender Kumar, were arrested at Budh Vihar in North-West Delhi on Monday after they were found to be in possession of 7.5 kg of heroin. The police said they had collected the consignment from Khanna Market near Tis Hazari courts. Surender too was arrested by the Narcotics Branch in 1998 for allegedly possessing 1 kg heroin. He was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment on two counts by the lower courts. However, he appealed in the Delhi High Court which acquitted him. The Supreme Court had also turned down an appeal by the police against the acquittal. After his release, Surender resumed drug trafficking, the police said. He would procure the contraband from Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh and supply them to peddlers in Haryana and Punjab. Two cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (Prevention) Act has been registered and further investigations are on.
