KATHMANDU: The seven-party alliance for restoration of democracy on Wednesday rejected calls by the Government to participate in the coming municipal polls. Nepali Congress president Girija Prasad Koirala told a European Union (EU) delegation that it would be suicidal for the alliance to take part in the election "while being squeezed between the two guns," referring to the King Gyanendra's security forces and Maoist rebels. He told them that the unilateral ceasefire announced by Maoists should be utilised as an opportunity to end violence and resolve the crisis through dialogue. Mr. Koirala said the need for a neutral and credible third party, supported by key regional and global players, was critical , according to a statement issued by Nepali Congress chief secretary Basant Gauchan.
