Special Correspondent
PONDICHERRY: The Lt Governor, M.M. Lakhera, has said that negative attitude had been cause of backwardness of development in farm and dairy projects. Inaugurating a three-day national workshop on `production and maintenance of quality semen for improved breeding in cattle and buffaloes` under the national Project for Cattle and Buffalo breeding at the Rajiv Gandhi College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences here on Wednesday, he regretted that agricultural sector and dairy projects had not been given due attention though about 66 per cent of the country's total population depended on agriculture for their livelihood. He said that the milk yield recorded in Pondicherry was around 987 kg., which was far less than the national average of 2,038 kg. This itself focused the need for proper breeding of cattle and buffaloes. He said that poultry, dairy and other related aspects of veterinary sciences should be given due recognition and importance for all round progress so that the economy of the country would raise fast and India could gain is rightful place among the developed nations. The Joint Secretary to Animal Husbandry and Dairying New Delhi Miss Nita Chowdhury, said that there was a need for proper training and creation of awareness and information about the whole aspect of the production and maintenance of quality semen for good cattle and buffaloes. Such workshops would be of help for the participants to have an exposure.
