HYDERABAD: The State Government has decided to develop 100 villages in Kadapa district as model habitations. Announcing this during question hour in the Assembly on Wednesday, Finance Minister K. Rosaiah said the Government had allocated Rs. 20.2 crores in the budget this year for implementing the model village scheme on a pilot basis for development of critical infrastructure in identified villages. Initially, it was proposed to take up the works in only 12 villages, but later their number was increased to 52. The Government had recently decided to implement the scheme in hundred villages and already released Rs. 9.42 crores for the purpose.
Handri-Neeva project
Denying the allegation of N. Janardhan Reddy (TDP) that works were awarded on nomination basis to contractors owing allegiance to the Congress, Mr. Rosaiah said they were executed by the Panchayat Raj Department. Major Irrigation Minister P. Laxmaiah said in response to a question that works connected with six packages of the Handri-Neeva Sujala Sravanthi Project had started recently. Mobilisation advances totalling Rs. 37.9 crores had been paid to contracting firms for 13 packages. P. Keshav (TDP) sought to know how works could be commenced without the approval of designs. G. Demudu (CPI) demanded airlifting of medical staff to treat viral fever patients in the Agency area of Visakhapatnam district. S. Rajaiah (CPI-M) wanted work on the Polavaram project stopped as there was the danger of 276 tribal villages getting submerged.
