HYDERABAD: With Dasara bringing back into focus Dandiya and Garbha dances of Gujarat, a workshop is being organised in the city on the colourful folk dances from Rajasthan. Shishu, a platform for learning and entertainment, will organise the 15-day workshop on Rajasthani folk dance from Friday. Noted folk dance exponent Gudduji from Udaipur and his group would conduct the `Rangilo Rajasthan dance workshop' at Shubham Atithi Gruha, opposite Food World, Penderghast Road, Secunderabad.
Main attractions
The dances to be taught include `Payaliya', `Deewana', Chari (dance of women filling water near well), Banwaasi (dance of tribals), Kaanuda (dance in praise of Lord Krishna), `Chundad' (dance with handembroidered `dupattas') and `Daangraas' (Garbha style of dance). Special dances involving balancing pots on the head while performing tricks (Chari Bhavai) and balancing lit lamps (Deep Nritya) and `Baraat' (dance during marriage procession) would be other attractions. The dance classes will be conducted on live music and the participants explained about each song, its purpose and context to help them understand the culture of the State, said Director of Shishu, Shashi Nahata.
Upholding traditions
"In these days of Salsa and western dances, it becomes all the more important to uphold our rich folk culture and traditions," said Shashi Nahata who is organising the workshop for the second time in the city. Over 45 persons -- children, teenagers and women -- have so far registered for the workshop. A fee of Rs. 1,100 will be charged for the 15-day workshop. For details contact Ph. No. 92465 46079. The workshop will be followed by a grand show to be presented by the participants at Hari Hara Kala Bhavan on October 22. The costumes of the performers would be procured from Udaipur, she said.
