LDF secures 8.14 p.c. votes more than UDF in district

Voters in 11 out of the 14 Assembly segments favour the LDF

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Left Democratic Front (LDF) has secured 8.14 per cent votes more than the United Democratic Front (UDF) in the local bodies elections in the district. Out of the 1,53,8,510 votes polled in the city corporation, district panchayat, four municipalities, 12 block panchayats and 78 grama panchayats in the district, the LDF share accounted for 65,2,786 scoring 42.43 per cent votes and the UDF secured 52,7,585 with 34.29 per cent votes.

According to the information gathered by the local self-government institutions in the district, the polling percentage was not so impressive compared to the previous elections. Independent candidates who polled 1,53,113 votes accounted for 9.95 per cent of the votes. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) came fourth with 1,15,940 votes amounting to 7.54 per cent.

The Democratic Indira Congress (Karunakaran) secured 78,923 votes registering 5.13 per cent and proved its strength in the district, where it claims to have decisive influence. All the other parties including Shiva Sena, Indian National League, Samajwadi Party, Rashtriya Janata Dal, Kerala Congress(B) and Revolutionary Socialist Party (B) together garnered 1,0163 votes registering 0.66 per cent, sources said.

Among the LDF constituents, the CPI(M) has the highest share of 32 per cent votes with the party candidates polling 4,92,190 votes. In the UDF, the Congress has the major vote share of 32.30 per cent. According to the preliminary assessment made by those in charge of the civic elections in each segment, the voters in 11 out of the 14 Assembly segments in the district have cast their franchise in favour of the LDF giving them a clear edge over the UDF. Except for a minor advantage in Parassala and Neyyatinkara Assembly constituencies, the LDF is in a comfortable position in all other segments, sources said.

The CPI, which scored 91,891 votes, stands second among the LDF constituents and the Janata Dal (Secular) came third with 22,395 votes.

The CMP stands second among the UDF allies polling 12,283 votes and the IUML third with 10,871 votes. Four parties, the RJD, KC(B), RSP(B) and PSP had to be satisfied with a tally of votes below 1,000.
