Letters to the Editor
The Allahabad High Court's order quashing the law granting minority status to Aligarh Muslim University, and holding as illegal the reservation of seats for Muslims in post-graduate medical courses is welcome. AMU is one of the oldest and famed universities of India with a secular fabric. Appeasing a section of people in the name of minorities is nothing but votebank politics. This trend will destabilise social harmony in the long run.
K.P. Ashok Kumar,
* * * The High Court ruling will go a long way in curbing the tendency of our political class to provide reservation on the basis of religion. Education is a vital component of the country's progress and it should be free from the politics of reservation. The state can instead offer economic aid, fee concession and the like to the weaker sections.
Abhishek Gairola,
* * * The continuation of the minority status to AMU would have been detrimental to its progress in the long run. It is unfortunate that some learned scholars of the university are against the Court ruling. The Centre should not appeal against the verdict
Chandramohan Nayak,
* * * The need of the hour is for governments to start de-reserving. The framers of the Constitution had different ideas in mind when they evolved the reservation policy. But it has now become a tool for politicians. AMU administrators would do well not to become pawns in their hands. There are many other ways of uplifting the Muslim community.
P. Rajanikant Kansara,
