Letters to the Editor
The article "Economic growth and the Millennium Goals" (Oct. 6) was comprehensive, touching all relevant points. As pointed out in the article, it is time attention was paid to those who suffer from lack of access to essential things required for a decent living. Some other areas that need attention are government-sponsored caste and religious discrimination, emergence of corporate hospitals and educational institutions, and their tendency to place business prospects before social responsibility. The poor must start getting some benefits from India's booming economy in real time.
R.K. Murthy,
* * * For India to achieve the Millennium Development Goals, it is important to make a massive investment in human capital. While one part of India shines the other is lagging behind. India is promoting itself as a health-cum-tourist destination offering super speciality treatment to foreigners at affordable prices. On the other hand, a vast majority here cannot afford even basic medical facilities.
