KASARAGOD: M.V. Balakrishnan of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) was elected president of the 16-member Kasaragod district panchayat on Thursday.

In the district panchayat, the LDF-Indian National League-Democratic Indira Congress (Karunakaran) combine has eight votes, while the United Democratic Front (UDF) has seven and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) one.
