KANNUR: United Democratic Front (UDF) members were chosen presidents of Panur, Ramanthali and Narath grama panchayats through draw of lots on Thursday as neither the UDF nor the Left Democratic Front (LDF) could secure majority in these local bodies. In the Panur grama panchayat, T.T. Rajan of the Congress was backed by luck to become the president.
Votes
In the election, he and his CPI(M) rival K.K. Sudheerkumar secured five votes each. In the 12-member panchayat, the LDF and the UDF shared five seats each and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) bagged two seats. Both the fronts decided not to seek BJP support in the president's election. The two BJP members abstained from the voting. In the 14-member Ramanthali grama panchayat, where the UDF and the LDF shared seven seats each, the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) member Meethal Mahamood Haji was selected president in the draw of lots. His rival was Parathi Damodaran of the CPI(M). In the Narath grama panchayat, Reena Koyyon of the Congress became the president. Luck did not favour her rival K.K. Omana of the CPI(M) in the draw of lots. In the 81 panchayats in the district, the LDF has secured clear majority in 61 panchayats and the UDF in 17.
