BANGALORE: The winner of the Ramon Magsaysay Award for 2005, V. Shantha, has called for a concerted research effort by all cancer societies to make India a cancer-free country. The organisations should also spread awareness about cancer in a comprehensive manner, she said. Speaking after the Karnataka Cancer Society here felicitated her on Thursday, Dr. Shantha stressed the need to diagnose cancer at an early stage. On the Magsaysay Award, she said it was an honour for her Adyar Cancer Society and not for herself as an individual. The Adyar Cancer Society has been serving cancer patients from all sections of society since its inception in 1954, she said. She recalled that the Adyar Cancer Society was started at a time when more people were dying of cancer than any other disease. She reiterated the need for more research to completely wipe out the disease. Health and Family Welfare Minister N. Cheluvaraya Swamy lauded the contributions made by Dr. Shantha in cancer research and dubbed her work extraordinary. Governor T.N. Chaturvedi said the emphasis should be on providing effective treatment for cancer patients at an affordable cost. Karnataka Cancer Society president C.K.A.N. Shastry, secretary Nafisa Fathima and joint secretary T.D. Srinivas were present.
