LUCKNOW: Giving a major impetus to rice exports from Uttar Pradesh, the State Government has extended the stipulated duration of Rice Export Policy for the next five years. The decision was taken to enable rice farmers get better prices for their produce and encourage exports to offshore markets. U.P. Governor T.V. Rajeswar had already given his seal of approval in the matter. Earlier, the Policy was valid till September 30 this year under the kharif marketing year 2000-2005. State PWD and Agriculture Marketing and Exports Minister Shivpal Singh Yadav said now the Policy would be functional till September 30, 2010. A notification to his effect had been issued in this regard. He informed that exports of Basmati and Pusa Basmati rice from the state would continue to be extempted from the levy. However, all non-Basmati brands would be subjected to normal levy, but the paddy used for producing this rice would be exempted from `mandi' tax and the two per cent development cess. The Minister assured that all factors impeding rice exports from the state would be mitigated by the state government agencies. "For this purpose, we have constituted a committee headed by Principal Secretary Agricultural Marketing," Mr Yadav said. -- UNI
