Bindu elected Thrissur Mayor

She promises to improve drinking water, power supply in city



FIRST LADY: R. Bindu takes the oath of office as Mayor before District Collector K. S. Premachandra Kurup in Thrissur on Thursday.

THRISSUR: R. Bindu of the Communist Party of India(Marxist) was elected Mayor of the Thrissur Corporation on Thursday.

A professor with Sree Kerala Varma College here and wife of A. Vijayaraghavan, MP, she is the first woman Mayor of the Corporation.

Prof. Bindu beat Subi Babu of the Congress. District Collector K.S. Premachandra Kurup was the returning officer of the election held at the Corporation Council Hall.

Prof. Bindu was nominated by M. Vijayan of the CPI. The nomination was seconded by A.M. Krishnan of the CPI(M). Ms. Subi Babu was nominated by James Pellissery. P.V. Sarojini seconded the nomination.

The 52-member Council comprises 33 representatives of the Left Democratic Front, 18 United Democratic Front councilmen and an independent. The independent P.O. Abdul Muthalif did not cast his vote.

M.K. Sooryaprakash of the Democratic Indira Congress (Karunakaran) was elected Deputy Mayor.

Later, Prof. Bindu assumed office. Collector Premachandra Kurup administered the oath of office.

Ms. Bindu said that efforts would be made to improve drinking water and power supply in Thrissur town and eliminate corruption in the Corporation.

K. Sreekumar of the CPI was elected president of the district panchayat. His name was nominated by K.K. Surendran. A.N. Rajan seconded the nomination.

Mr. Sreekumar (24 votes) beat Venugopala Menon of the UDF (six votes). The UDF has five members and LDF 25 in the panchayat. A DIC(K) member from the Kaiparambu division, N. Leela, said she voted "by mistake" for the UDF.

P.G. Jayaprakasan of the CPI(M), P.A. Gopi of the CPI, M. Krishnadas of the CPI(M), M.P. Jackson of the Congress, K.P. Valsalan of the CPI(M) and M.N. Sasidharan of the CPI(M) were elected chairman of the Kunnamkulam, Kodungallur, Guruvayur, Irinjalakuda, Chavakkad and Chalakudy municipalities respectively.
