THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: C. Jayan Babu of the CPI(M) was sworn in as the 42nd Mayor of the capital city and his party colleague V. Jayaprakash took the oath of office as the Deputy Mayor at a meeting of the City Corporation Council on Thursday. The CPI swallowed its pride to give up its claim to the post of Deputy Mayor. The nine CPI members in the council voted for the LDF. Mr. Jayan Babu, representing the Pappanamcode ward, was elected by 75 votes to 10 against the UDF candidate Johnson Joseph (Congress) while Mr. Jayaprakash, representing Kulathur, won by the same margin against Badarunnisa of the IUML. The eight DIC(K) members and the two Independent councillors, Chala Mohan and Poonthura Siraj, voted for the LDF, while the lone BJP-backed Independent abstained from voting. District Collector N. Ayyappan presided over the council meeting. Mr. Jayan Babu's name was proposed by the former Deputy Mayor M. Sujanapriyan of the CPI and seconded by Puthenkada Vijayan (CPI-M), while Mr. Joseph's name was proposed by Beemapally Rashid (IUML) and seconded by the Pettah councillor D. Anilkumar (Congress). In the election to the post of Deputy Mayor, Mr. Jayaprakash's name was proposed by R. Satheeshkumar (Kerala Congress-Joseph) and seconded by B. Soman (CPI-M) while Ms. Badarunnisa's name was proposed by Sheeba Justin (Congress) and seconded by Biju Harikumar (Congress).
